• Discuss the breadth of Western/European cultural experiences which may be projected onto non-white clients suffering from racial stress.
• Discuss practical mindfulness and compassion-based techniques which reduce the likelihood of projecting harmful cultural values onto non-white clients.
• Assess how clinical mirroring is driven by a framework rooted in neuroscience and the mental health of the clinician.
• Discuss the framework of liberation psychology, and how personal mindfulness/compassion-based practices increase the utilization of this framework.
• Practice liberatory therapeutic approaches while not sacrificing preferred theoretical orientation or methods.
  

About the Presenter

Broderick Sawyer, PhD, is a clinical psychologist, clinical trainer, and consultant located in Louisville, Kentucky. With a diverse training background cutting across multiple theoretical orientations (e.g., CBT, psychodynamic, mindfulness, compassion, somatic approaches, etc.), he provides training, consultation, and mentorship to mental health professionals. He also provides immersive training in Applied Liberation Psychology for intersectional cultural competence to assist professionals working with diverse patients. For training and consulting inquiries he can be contacted through his website: Brodericksawyer.com Having received his doctorate in 2018 from the University of Louisville, Dr. Sawyer has quickly established himself as a prolific contributor, already amassing over 200 speaking and training engagements, and producing nearly 20 peer reviewed articles and book chapters thus far in his career. Additionally, Dr. Sawyer is routinely invited as a guest contributor for media outlets, most notably several guest interviews with CNN. Further, along with a visiting faculty appointment at the Nalanda Institute of Contemplative Science, he has collaborated with PsychWire and the Psychotherapy Networker to disseminate Liberation Psychology-focused teachings towards culturally competent mental healthcare.

This event will take place virtually on Zoom. Attendees will receive Zoom information upon registration. 

It is important to note that APA continuing education rules require that KPA only give credit to those who attend the entire workshop.  An evaluation of the workshop must be completed. Those who sign in more than 15 minutes after the scheduled start time or leave before the workshop is completed will not receive CE credit. Partial credit may not be given.
