The workshop will introduce our integrative conceptualization of the patient-therapist alliance and basic principles and practices with regard to alliance rupture repair and training therapists to negotiate ruptures. It will blend didactics (including video demonstrations) with experiential exercises to demonstrate various principles and practices. Skill level: Intermediate 

Workshop Objectives: 

Based on the content of this workshop, attendees will be able to...

  • Recognize interpersonal markers of alliance ruptures with their patients.
  • Recognize intrapersonal markers of alliance ruptures with their patients.
  • Repair alliance ruptures with their patients.
About the Presenter: 
J. Christopher Muran, PhD, is Dean and Professor at the Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology, Adelphi University. He is a fellow of APA (Divisions 12 and 29), past-president of the Society for Psychotherapy Research (SPR), and past-editor of Psychotherapy Research. He is Principal Investigator of the Mount Sinai Beth Israel Psychotherapy Research Program (which has been supported by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health) and on faculty at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He is also on faculty in the NYU Postdoctoral Program. He has published 10 books, over 175 papers, and received distinguished career awards from the American Psychological Association, National Register and Society for Psychotherapy Research. Dr. Muran maintains a private practice (providing treatment and consultation services) and is co-founder of the Center for Alliance-Focused Training: https://www.therapeutic-alliance.org/.

CE Credits/Attendance:
It is important to note that APA continuing education rules require that KPA only give credit to those who attend the entire workshop.  An evaluation of the workshop must be completed. Those who login more than 15 minutes after the scheduled start time or leave before the workshop is completed will not receive CE credit. Partial credit may not be given.

This program is approved for 1.5 CE hours by the Kentucky Psychological Association.
