KPA Membership Model

Over the course of the Kentucky Psychological Association’s 90-year history, the organization and its leadership have been dedicated to supporting psychologists in Kentucky. Support for our members has been a priority for our organization since its founding.

Over the past year, Dr. AJ Steele, Chair of the Membership Committee has been working with the membership committee and KPA Board to update our membership model. The new model will better allow members to take full advantage of all KPA offers and creates additional opportunities for engagement from those who want more from KPA. This new membership model is also designed to address increased operational costs and support the excellent service and forward-thinking programming we have developed at KPA. Costs have increased significantly in the past several years. As one example, our member services platform has increased fees by 5% each of the past two years and we have seen similar increases from other vendors. Additionally, we have worked to create an equitable work setting for our staff including adding health insurance benefits, parental leave policy, and the annual cost of living adjustments which have resulted in increased personnel costs. Through these efforts, we are able to recruit and retain outstanding staff. We have worked hard not to increase dues given the challenges in reimbursement and COVID-related disruption that our members have faced. However, after almost a decade without an increase, these costs have started impacting our operational effectiveness. To that end, this new model will result in an approximately 10% dues increase for most members.

As part of this new structure, we have streamlined our member categories and we are also introducing new tiered membership opportunities. For those of you who regularly get CEs from KPA and attend annual conventions, our gold and silver tiers offer additional savings that can be folded into monthly dues payments. We hope many of you will take advantage of the additional opportunities our gold and silver tiers offer.

While this new model will help move the future of KPA forward, we want to make clear that we are not solving these financial challenges through dues alone. Over the past several years we have been more actively pursuing grant funding for programs and operational support. We were able to fund additional advocacy activity this year through a grant from APA and are currently fundraising to launch our Community Mental Health Fund. We intend on keeping the dues structure below in place for at least 3 years before considering any further adjustments and expect to grow our external funding streams over that time.

Your membership will be transitioning to this new model starting with renewal dates in January 2023 and onward so these will be reflected on your 2023 renewal. We truly value your membership and expect you will continue to find value in KPA.  While this message serves as the introduction of this model, we will have additional communication and opportunities to ask questions before the end of the year. As always, we are available for feedback and questions!
