Alert: New CE Requirement

In 2022, a law was passed to add an additional 3 hours of required continuing education on the topic of social and cultural factors that affect health, functioning, and quality of life to the required 39 hours of continuing education credit every 3 years for licensees under KBEP. This change in the licensure law was initiated by KPA and will go into effect in June of 2024.

History of this Change.

The KPA Diversity Committee brought a concern to the Board that clients from minoritized backgrounds, particularly Black patients, were reporting difficulty finding culturally competent providers. While this issue was discussed among the KPA Board for some time, ultimately KPA decided to support this legislation for several reasons including:

1) The competence issue initially brought to the Board

2) The increase in availability of telehealth  will put more members in contact with populations across the state with whom they will be relatively less familiar.

3) The increasing amount of research on cultural variables and the quickly changing landscape of available information

4) The importance of this requirement to our BIPOC psychologists in KPA and our commitment to better respond to those members of our community.

In addition to the discussions within KPA leadership, members were surveyed ahead of this advocacy push in 2022. A significant majority of KPA members responding to multiple surveys were in favor of this change. With support of membership and leadership, KPA supported the legislation that passed in 2022.

What does this mean for you?

To allow for licensees to meet this requirement for licensure cycles starting after 2024, the Kentucky Board of Examiners of Psychology will begin requiring 3 hours in Cultural Competency for all renewal applications starting on June 30th, 2027. This means that all psychology licensees will need to meet this requirement during their next licensure cycle. KPA will note the workshops that meet this requirement in the same way we do other required workshops. Of note, we will have a workshop in August 2024 that meets this requirement as well as multiple workshops at the KPA Convention in November.
