Workshop 2: Intimate Partner and Domestic Abuse Among Older Adults:  Legal Responsibilities, Clinical and Ethical Issues, and Intervention Opportunities, 1.5 CE

This workshop provides an overview of elder abuse among spouses or other intimate partners including a discussion of psychologists’ legal responsibilities under Kentucky law. Skill Level: Intermediate. This workshop fulfills 1.5 of the 3 hours necessary according to the KRS 194A.540 requirement for domestic violence and elder abuse training. 

Workshop Objectives

Participants will be able to:
  • Describe Kentucky psychologists' legal obligations related to spousal/intimate partner violence and how to apply these to work with older couples.

  • Describe the dynamics of intimate partner violence including features unique to older couples.
  • Identify legal remedies for addressing intimate partner violence among older couples and community resources which can provide assistance.

About the Presenter:

 David Hanna, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and since January, 2015 a behavior health program manager with Passport Health Plan. Previously, he worked in community mental health settings including 27 years for Bluegrass.org, which serves the 17 counties of the Central Kentucky Bluegrass region. Prior to his retirement from Bluegrass in August 2014, he held a variety of positions including service area manager, director of quality assurance, and Vice-President for Clinical Services. From January, 2013 through April, 2014, he was the Interim CEO. In 2012, he received the American Psychological Association’s Heiser Award for Advocacy and in 2013 was named the Psychologist of the Year by the Kentucky Psychological Association. In 2017, he was inducted into the Kentucky Psychological Association’s Hall of Fame. Dr. Hanna received his bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University and his M. S. and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Kentucky. He completed a post-doc in developmental disabilities at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

This program has been approved for 1.5 CE credits by the Kentucky Psychological Association (KPA).

It is important to note that APA continuing education rules require that KPA only give credit to those who attend the entire workshop.  An evaluation of the workshop must be completed. Those who arrive more than 15 minutes after the scheduled start time or disconnect before the workshop is completed will not receive CE credit. Partial credit may not be given.

Psychologists: 
KPA is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. KPA maintains responsibility for this program and its content. KPA is also an approved sponsor for the Kentucky Board of Examiners of Psychology.  

Social Workers & Art Therapists: 
KPA is an approved sponsor for the Kentucky Board of Social Work, the Kentucky Board of Professional Art Therapists. (Provider #1004)

Pastoral Counselors:
KPA is approved to offer Continuing Education to Pastoral Counselors as stated in 201 KAR 38:070, Section 3(1)(b) as an approved KBEP provider.
