This workshop will provide participants with a foundational understanding of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, theoretically and experientially. There will be a brief overview of the theory and philosophy underlying the ACT model. The majority of the workshop will focus on the therapeutic processes and clinical applications of ACT with adolescents, both generally and within the context of young people who identify as transgender. Skill level: Intermediate

Blocking Out Pain: Lego-Supported Therapy Activities, 1.0 CE

The use of Lego bricks and toys in therapy is not uncommon; however, Lego are rarely used for assessment and intervention purposes. The following workshop will describe elements of play-based therapy and demonstrate how Lego can be utilized to assist interventions and assessments. The workshop will also include hands-on opportunities to practice Lego-based techniques. Skill level: Intermediate

Providing Ethically Sound and Effective Treatments in High Conflict Family Law Cases, 3.0 CE

Are you a clinician who has found yourself working with court-involved families despite your best efforts to avoid these cases? Are you a clinician who rejects referrals that are court-involved or court ordered for treatment? Are you a clinician who is interested in working with court-involved families but lacks specialized forensic training? This workshop is primarily for non-forensic psychologists who are interested in or find themselves working with court-involved and high conflict families. However, seasoned court-aware clinicians seeking research and practice updates based on research and guiding documents from the last 5-15 years would also find this workshop useful. The workshop will primarily cover 1) pre-screening for cases that are likely to be high conflict, 2) the role of the therapist in high conflict/court involved cases, 3) ethical considerations and ethical pitfalls of working with court-involved families, 4) therapist testimony in cases involving high conflict/court-involved cases. This workshop fulfills the KRS 319 ethics/risk management requirement for psychology professionals. Skill level: Intermediate

Adolescents Substance Abuse: Current Trends and Best Practices, 3.0 CE

This three-hour training will provide attendees with an in-depth review of adolescent substance use. Current trends in the use of all substances by youth will be reviewed, including the increase of adolescent overdose in the United States. The importance of early prevention strategies will be highlighted, along with a review of specific intervention strategies that can help youth address their use of substances. Treatment options for youth and aligning with family/caregiver support will also be discussed. Skill level: Intermediate

  • Review the impact of substance use on adolescent development, including brain development
  • Review pertinent treatment aspects to consider working with adolescents with co-occurring disorders.
