Providing evidence-based psychotherapy to transgender and nonbinary clients: Beyond the basics, 3 CE

Workshop Description:

This workshop will focus on best practices in psychotherapeutic practice with transgender and nonbinary clients. Practitioners who have not had any exposure to working with transgender and nonbinary clients should learn terminology prior to attending this workshop. This workshop will cover applied techniques and practice for the following topics: integrating a minority stress framework into psychotherapy, addressing internalized transnegativity, incorporating and understanding of multiple systems of oppression to address these components with clients, and addressing the role of gatekeeper with clients. This session will use transcripts from real psychotherapy sessions with transgender and nonbinary clients to incorporate an applied approach.

Workshop Objectives: 

• Participants will be able to apply the minority stress framework in considering their psychotherapeutic practice with transgender and nonbinary clients.
  
  
• Participants will assess their roles as gatekeepers to demonstrate an awareness of how this role may impact the therapeutic relationship with their clients.
  
  
• Participants will be able to summarize how systems of oppression impact their transgender and nonbinary clients and will be able to explain how these systems can be addressed within psychotherapy sessions.
