During this time of extreme polarization in the c ountry, loyalties to different political tribes create tensions, as do diff erent ways of coping with this stressful environment. Political stress has destroyed friendships and invaded couple and relationships. This is new ter ritory for therapists, and of course, we are dealing with our own distress about what’s going on in the country. The presenter will offer clinical str ategies for helping clients deal with relationship struggles complicated by politics, along with examples of how he has applied couples therapy strate gies to create community interventions to reduce polarization, via the nonp rofit Braver Angels. About the Presenter:
Bil l Doherty, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department of Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota where he directs The Minnesota Coup les on the Brink Project and The Citizen Professional Center. Clinically, h e focuses on couples on the brink of divorce, on relational ethics in the e veryday lives of clients, and on political stress in relationships. Followi ng the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, he co-founded Braver Angels, a citi zen initiative bringing conservatives and liberals together to counteract p olitical polarization and restore the fraying social fabric in American soc iety. Braver Angels now has volunteers working in all 50 states. His latest book is The Ethical Lives of Clients: Transcending Self-Interest in Psycho therapy, published by the American Psychological Association. Along with hi s daughter, he has started a foundation that offers free training in relati onal ethics in therapy for students and practicing therapists.
