Cormier, Ph.D., CMPC, LPCA Opinions regarding the value of youth sports are plentiful and have gained increased national attention in recent years. Some research has indicated that organized sports help young people develop confidence, persistence, teamwork skills, as well as other personal strengths. However, some have postulated that an ‘adult takeover’ of youth sport occurred, shifting the focus from fun, to winning at all cost. Perhaps the actual experience lies somewhere in between, yet it seems clear that youth sport has become increasingly influential in children’s upbringing and socialization. Thus, it is important that mental health professionals are keenly aware of the social context of youth sport participation in America, and of pathways for healthy sport development in the promotion of overall well-being. About the Presenters: Ben Birkby, Psy.D., is a clinical psychologist who has been providing professional services to children and families for 18 years. He holds a Psy.D. from Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Birkby is an Associate at StrongMinds, a group practice dedicated to providing specialty behavioral health services for children, adolescents and young adults, and their families. At StrongMinds Dr. Birkby treats a wide variety of conditions and concerns ranging from normal developmental challenges to serious emotional and behavioral difficulties. Dr. Birkby also works with youth athletes, other performers and their parents to develop confidence and discipline, increase enjoyment, and reach their potential in sports and other areas of life. Dr. Birkby also maintains a full-time position as a licensed psychologist and senior evaluation researcher at REACH Evaluation. REACH consults with non-profit, for-profit, philanthropic, and governmental entities in support of efforts to improve services and bring about organizational and community change. Dr. Birkby previously worked in summer therapeutic recreation programs in New York and Kentucky and completed his predoctoral internship at Boys Town in Nebraska. He served on the Ethics Committee of the Kentucky Psychological Association from 2004-2007, and served as both Chair and Vice-Chair of that committee. He also served a two-year term on the Board of Directors of the Kentucky Psychological Association from 2010-2011, and was a recipient of the Art of Governance Award from the Center for Nonprofit Excellence during his tenure. He is currently a member of KPA's Political Action Committee. Marc L. Cormier, Ph.D., CMPC, LPCA is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion at the University of Kentucky. At UK, Dr. Cormier serves as the Director for the Sport and Exercise Psychology Graduate Program and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses related to psychology and sociology of sport, group dynamics in sport, and applied sport and exercise psychology. In addition to his faculty responsibilities, Dr. Cormier is the Director of Counseling and Performance Psychology Services with UK Athletics, where he works with athletes from all sports. A native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, he received his M.A. in Sport Psychology from McGill University, before receiving his M.A. in Community Counseling and Ph.D. in Sport and Exercise Psychology from West Virginia University. His primary areas of research include the psychological aspects of sports injury, team cohesion, and mental skills training and he has published in regional, national, and international journals/conference proceedings. Additionally, Dr. Cormier is a certified mental performance consultant (CMPC), a member of the United States Olympic Committee’s Sport Psychology registry, and a Licensed Professional Counselor (Associate) in Kentucky. +Any student member needing CE credit must register at the KPA member rate. Event Location It is important to note that APA continuing education rules require that KPA only give credit to those who attend the entire workshop. An evaluation of the workshop must be completed. Those who arrive more than 15 minutes after the scheduled start time or leave before the workshop is complete will not receive CE credit. Partial credit may not be given.
