Shame and Self-Loathing in the Treatment of Trauma, 6 CE

Presented by Janina Fisher, Ph.D.

Shame has an insidious impact on our traumatized clients’ ability to find relief and perspective even with good treatment. Feelings of worthlessness and inadequacy interfere with taking in positive experiences, leaving only hopelessness. This workshop will introduce participants to understanding shame from a neurobiological perspective that helps clients relate to their shame with greater curiosity, discriminate the cognitive, emotional, and physiological components of shame responses, and transform shame-promoting cognitive schemas. Skill Level: Intermediate

Workshop Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the role of shame and self-loathing as a survival response to abuse and neglect.
  • Identify the neurobiological effects of shame
  • Discriminate the physiological from the cognitive contributors to shame
  • Describe cognitive-behavioral and psychoeducational interventions to address shame-based cognitive schemas
  • Utilize simple somatic techniques to address the physiological effects of shame
  • Implement an ego state approach to working with shame and self-loathing
