Join KVH & our coalition of ThriveKY partners this year as we provide updates on state and federal policies that impact the health and wellbeing of Kentuckians. Speakers will discuss how to advocate for a stronger safety net through public assistance programs designed to support thriving communities.

Advocacy for Thriving Communities, 2.0 CE

Presented by Sheila Schuster, Ph.D., Emily Beauregard, M.P.H., Marcie Timmerman, M.H.A.

The workshop will describe the social determinants of,.  health, both physical and behavioral, and how these factors are impacted by policy decisions made by public officials. Information will be provided on behavioral health topics including Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), mental health and substance use disorder services and suicide prevention. Updates on policies affecting the economy, health care access, food security, housing, transportation, child care and public health will be given. Speakers will discuss how to advocate for a stronger safety net through public assistance programs designed to assist individuals with improving their health and to support thriving communities. Tips on being a more effective advocate in your community will be outlined. Skill Level: Beginning

Workshop Objectives:

Based on the content of this workshop, attendees will be able to:

  • Participants will be able to describe the relationship between social determinants such as housing, child care, jobs, food security, and education with an individual’s physical and mental health.
  • Participants will be able to list Kentucky’s safety-net resources and public assistance programs that can be utilized to better assist community members in understanding their rights and to more effectively guide them in the decisions that affect their health & wellbeing.
  • Participants will be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the process of becoming a more effective community advocate.
  • Participants will be able to describe state policies and programs designed to prevent suicide and to improve the behavioral health of Kentuckians.
This program is approved for 2 CE credits by the Kentucky Psychological Association (KPA).
