Addressing the Suicide Crisis Among Student-Athletes: A Playbook for Families and Coaches

Virtually Friday, June 17, 2022 from 11:00 AM EST - 12:00 PM EST

The recent suicides of six NCAA student-athletes highlight the need for increased attention to the mental health of youth participating in team sports. Among adolescents and young adults involved in athletics, pressure to perform to perfection in the public eye can be especially intense. The worsening crisis in mental health among adolescents and young adults is not particular to those involved in sports. Emergency room visits for mental health concerns, including suicide attempts and self-injury, rose sharply among adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. Suicide rates have increased to decade-high levels both locally and nationally among individuals under the age of 25, as adolescents and young adults have seen their lives disrupted by a pandemic and societal unrest, with every win and loss scrutinized by the world of social media.

The Kentucky Psychological Association will present “Addressing the Suicide Crisis Among Student-Athletes: A Playbook for Families and Coaches” on June 17, 2022 from 11:00am-12:00pm EDT. Discussion topics will include risk factors and warning signs for suicidality among student-athletes, ways to navigate conversations with players during and before a crisis emerges, and methods for encouraging protective and resiliency factors for young people. Practical advice for addressing suicide risk will be shared. This event will be offered as a Facebook Live event, available to the public.
