Melissa Steinkamp, Ph.D., My interest in psychology can be boiled down simply to an interest in people! Early in life, I found myself drawn to books and stories that explored what it meant to be human. Humans have such a complex and wonderful capacity for feeling and living, but being a person can get messy. My approach to psychology and to therapy is to explore the whole person. Therapy isn’t just about “finding what’s wrong”, it’s about exploring all of the parts that make you, “you”, and finding ways together to help cope with the messy parts of life. Psychotherapy with me is collaborative and relationship-based. You are the expert on you! I draw heavily on the principles of Interpersonal Psychotherapy and aim to create a genuine relationship with each of my clients. My clinical interests include depression, anxiety, interpersonal relationship concerns, family of origin concerns, identity development, trauma, and communication skills. I began my education in psychology at Transylvania University in Lexington Kentucky, where I graduated in 2014 with a major in Psychology and minor in Political Science. My education at Transylvania continued to nurture my curiosity and interest in people and ignited my passion for pursuing a career as a Clinical Psychologist. Following my time at Transylvania, I continued my masters and doctorate level education in Clinical Psychology at Spalding University in Louisville Kentucky, where I specialized in the treatment of Children, Adolescents, Adults, and Families. I completed my doctoral internship in Clinical Psychology at the University of Kentucky Counseling Center, where I continued to hone my skills as a generalist practitioner. I graduated from Spalding University with my doctorate in Clinical Psychology in August 2020. I’m excited to give back to the state that fully educated me! Outside of Psychology, I enjoy riding horses, reading, playing Dungeons and Dragons, laughing at my own jokes, and spending time with my two cats and husband.
