Workshop 2: Treating Depression in Long-Term Care Settings, 1.5 CE
This workshop is part 2 of a 2-part series. Information on part 1 can be found by clicking here.

Presented by Suzanne Meeks, Ph.D.

This workshop will introduce evidence-based interventions for depression in long-term care settings, with a more detailed description of BE-ACTIV, a behavioral treatment developed specifically for practice in nursing homes. The goal is to provide a strong conceptual basis for adapting and implementing these treatments that can flexibly respond to the restrictions of diverse long-term care settings. Skill Level: Intermediate

Workshop Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • List the principal challenges and barriers to delivering effective treatments for depression in long-term care settings.
  • Describe the key conceptual underpinnings of evidence-based treatments in long-term care settings, including commonalities across treatments.
  • Implement the BE-ACTIV treatment for depressed clients in nursing homes.

About the Presenter:

Suzanne Meeks, Ph.D. received her B.A. in Psychology from Yale University, and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the Catholic University of America. She completed an NIH-sponsored post-doctoral research fellowship at Indiana University, focused on Geropsychology. She is a Professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of Louisville, where she has been since she started as an Assistant Professor in 1987. She served her Department as Director of Clinical Training from 1995-2000, as Vice Chair from 2007-2009, and as Department Chair from 2009 to 2019. Her research interests have broadly covered psychopathology and well-being in late life, and she has spent much of the last two decades developing and refining an intervention for depression in nursing home residents called BE-ACTIV. Her work has been published in such journals as Psychology and Aging, Journals of Gerontology (Series B), Aging and Mental Health, and The Gerontologist. She has received funding from the National Institute of Mental Health, the Kindred Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Currently she is collaborating with researchers at the Providence VA and elsewhere to implement a VA version of BE-ACTIV in Community Living Centers (VA nursing homes). At U of L, Dr. Meeks teaches undergraduate and graduate courses related to clinical psychology and aging. She was the 2008 President of the Society of Clinical Geropsychology, and is a member of American Psychological Association Divisions 12 & 20, Psychologists in Long Term Care (PLTC), and the Kentucky Psychological Association. She is a fellow of the Behavioral and Social Sciences Section of the Gerontological Society of America. She won the 2012 PLTC award for Outstanding Contributions to Psychology in Long Term Care. Dr. Meeks is currently the Editor-in-Chief of The Gerontologist; she served as Associate Editor of that journal from 2014-2018, has served on the editorial board of the Clinical Gerontologist, and has been a frequent grant reviewer for the NIMH.
